چکیده

Magnetic hard disk drives have undergone vast technological improvements since their introduction as storage devices over 45 years ago, and these improvements have had a marked influence on how disk drives are applied and what they can do. Areal density increases have exceeded the traditional semiconductor development trajectory and have yielded higher-capacity, higherperformance, and smaller-form-factor disk drives, enabling desktop and mobile computers to store multi-gigabytes of data easily. Server systems containing large numbers of drives have achieved unparalleled reliability, performance, and storage capacity. All of these characteristics have been achieved at rapidly declining disk costs. This paper relates advances in disk drives to corresponding trends in storage systems and projects where these trends may lead in the future.

Magnetic Data Storage and Nanoparticles

Magnetic storage, specifically in hard drives has advanced significantly since the first disk drive built in 1956 [1]. Interestingly enough, most of the changes thus far have been realized by scaling the components of a disk drive [1]. In recent years, the superparamagnetic limit has been seen as a possible limit to the rapid increase in hard drive capacities. Antiferromagnetically coupled (AFC...

Magic Quadrant for Mobile Data Protection

Gartner defines mobile data protection (MDP) products and services as software security methods that enforce confidentiality policies by encrypting data, and then defending access to that encrypted data on the primary and secondary storage systems of end-user workstations. These storage systems include the primary boot drive of a workstation and removable devices used for portability. Storage t...

Editorial signal processing for high density storage channels

ALTHOUGH Moore’s law is generally associated with progress in integrated circuit technologies, it has been equally applicable to the magnetic hard disk drive area with respect to the annual rate of areal density growth. Since the early 1990s, areal density has grown at the rate of 60% annually, thus, doubling the data storage density every 18 months. Over the past two years, the annual growth r...
